Dennis Norman Slutts was born at his parents Post Office/Store on July 12, 1935 in Mt. Zion, IA to Clayton and Mary Sanford Slutts.  He married his high school sweetheart, Mariel Lenahan, on November 6, 1954 in Fairbury.  They were inseparable for 66 years until her passing in 2021.  Prior to their marriage, he was an avid baseball player.

He enlisted in the US Army in 1957 as a quartermaster and was stationed in Germany.  After his honorable discharge from the military, he traveled around the Midwest constructing concrete bridges. In 1964, he accepted a position with Johnson County Secondary Roads, bought a home in Lone Tree, Iowa to put down roots and raised their family.

He retired from Johnson County Secondary Roads after 33 years of service. Dennis enjoyed the solitude of working on woodworking projects in his basement workshop.  Dennis was a Boy Scout leader in Lone Tree for many years while his sons worked on their badges, hiking, camping and Eagle Scout project.

He and Mariel enjoyed playing bingo, and visiting casinos.  They were fond of camping, fishing and shooting fireworks at their cabin on the Cedar River by Atalissa for many summers. They loved to dine out, socialize, and supported many area restaurants over the years.

Dennis is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Cindy Slutts of Atalissa, Iowa, and Clayton and Sarah Slutts of Oneida, Illinois; three grandchildren, Lacey Slutts and her husband John Moellers, Kristopher Slutts, and Brian Slutts; and a great-grandson, Arlo Moellers.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mariel; a brother, Conley Slutts and his parents.
