Gary A. Sebbert

Gary Allen Sebbert, 83, of Muscatine, Iowa, passed away on May 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted teacher, a passionate golfer, and a proud father of three daughters. 

Born in Humbolt, Kansas on November 2, 1939, to John Andrew Sebbert and Zella Mae Horton Sebbert he was the youngest of seven children. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his wife Judith Ann Larsen Sebbert and his three daughters, two sons-in-law, and 10 grandchildren: Erin and Ron Boltik and sons Christian and Noah; Amy and Randy Naumann and sons Sam, Gabe, Max and Eli; Paige Livingston and Rich O’Leary and Paige’s sons Carl, Erik, Dane and daughter, Mara.

At 6 feet 4 inches, this gentle giant, excelled at basketball and golf. Gary taught history and government for many years with most of his tenure in the Maquoketa, Iowa school district where he also coached basketball and women’s golf. He inspired generations of students with his enthusiasm and knowledge of world events. During the summer Gary could be found on a ladder painting houses with his fellow teaching partner, Claire Hoye.  Affectionately referred to as “Seb”, his teaching colleagues were also his community of friends and an infinite source of support and joy. After teaching, Gary sold insurance until his retirement.  In retirement he enjoyed substitute teaching, golfing and was immensely proud of helping to revitalize the Old Barn in Muscatine. Gary was an active member of his church, Zion Lutheran, as his faith was very important to him. 

A heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Premiere Estates and Pro Medica Hospice. Their genuine care of Gary was evident and the kindness they showed the family was a great source of comfort. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to: Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine, Iowa; Pro Medica Hospice in Davenport, Iowa; or Premiere Estates in Muscatine, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine, Iowa on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. A visitation will take place at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. Gary’s easy-going manner made him approachable and loved by all. He was often heard saying, “It’s no big deal!” and you could always find him engaged in a social gathering with desserts in hand.  So, in true “Gary” spirit, join us after the service. It won’t be a big deal, but please stop by to share a story, a laugh and some desserts in memory of him!
