Mariel Slutts, 86, of Lone Tree, Iowa died Wednesday, October 20, 2021, in Lutheran Living in Muscatine, Iowa.
Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, Illinois under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities. A family Catholic mass will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, November 13 in the chapel at Lutheran Living. Masks and sign in are required at the funeral mass. Entombment will be in Memory Gardens, Iowa City at a later date. Memorials may be made to Lone Tree First Responders.
The former Mariel Loretta Lenahan was born December 15, 1934 in Fairbury, Nebraska to Thomas and Margaret (Sullivan) Lenahan. She married her high school sweetheart, Dennis Slutts, on November 6, 1954 in Fairbury. Prior to her marriage, she was an elementary teacher in Fairbury before traveling with her husband to Germany when he was in the US Army. She later worked in Lone Tree as a substitute teacher, an editor/typesetter for the Lone Tree Reporter, and for the U.S. Postal Service. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lone Tree and was an avid doll collector. She enjoyed reading to elementary children, playing bingo, and visiting casinos. She took joy in cooking, decorating her home, and entertaining at family gatherings. She and Dennis were fond of camping at their cabin on the Cedar River by Atalissa for many summers. They loved to dine out, socialize, and supported many area restaurants over the years.
Mariel is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dennis; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Cindy Slutts of Atalissa, Iowa, and Clayton and Sarah Slutts of Oneida, Illinois; three grandchildren, Lacey Slutts and her husband John Moellers, Kristopher Slutts, and Brian Slutts; and a great-grandson, Arlo Moellers. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Lenahan and her parents.
