Rev. Samuel M. Oliver, 79, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Atlanta, Michigan, died Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Bickford of Davenport.
Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, Illinois, under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities. Burial is in First Congregational Church, Muskegon, Michigan at at time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Samuel MacBain Oliver was born February 2, 1942, in Muskegon, Michigan, the son of William MacBain and Marie (Hallberg) Oliver. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and his Divinity degree Chicago Theological Seminary.
Samuel served the South Congregational Church in Grand Rapids, MI. Later he moved to Houghton Michigan where he served Portage Lake United Church. Prior to his retirement he served the Atlanta Congregational Church in Atlanta, Michigan. Samuel served the Michigan United Church of Christ conference for over 38 years.
He enjoyed all things outdoors especially golfing, fishing, hunting and time spent with family and friends.
Samuel is survived by two children, Sarah E. Oliver of Davenport, and Stephen Oliver of Des Plaines, Illinois; a grandson, Samuel Oliver Martin; and a sister, Ann Roys of Grand Rapids, Michigan and his former wife of 28 years, Jill (Aitkin) Pietila. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Katherine Oliver, and a sister, Susan Potter.
